Amanya Cohen is partner at Ahmednasir Abdullahi Advocates, LLP assigned to the firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department. He joined the firm to conduct his pupillage in 2014 and was retained as an Advocate thereafter. His primary area of practice is criminal litigation where Cohen appears as the Defense counsel representing persons charged with white-collar and blue-collar crimes.
Cohen has successfully represented persons accused of serious crimes including terrorism, human and drug trafficking and has secured their release on bail pending trial. He attends to the arraignment, hearings, settlement conferences if any, and mitigation on sentencing. His criminal law practice stretches from subordinate courts all the way to representations at the Supreme Court of Kenya.
Apart from criminal litigation, Cohen numerously appears before the Environmental and Land Courts in matters concerning land fraud, breach of sale agreements amongst others.
He is also a seasoned employment and labour relations lawyer acting for both employers and employments in the enforcement of right to fair labour practice as enshrined in Article 41 of the Constitution. Cohen carefully analyzes each labour case and develops sound strategies to ensure that the client’s case is managed efficiently for the benefit of all parties concerned. He is well versed with the rules and regulations that govern employment disputes. Additionally, he is also an accredited mediator with the court annexed program of the Kenyan Judiciary.
Cohen currently serves as a council member and treasurer of the Law Society of Kenya where he is responsible for the value addition and welfare of members. He is also the immediate former trustee of Advocates Benevolent Association.
In addition to being and Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, he is also qualified as an Advocate in Uganda.
